Ghana is one of West Africa's easiest countries to visit: English is widely spoken, the people are welcoming and the main tourist routes are well established. A little preparation makes the first trip much smoother.

1. Check your visa early

Most visitors need a visa before arrival. Apply well ahead of your travel date and carry a printed copy of your approval, your return ticket and your accommodation details.

2. Sort out vaccinations

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry. Speak to a travel clinic about malaria prevention and other recommended vaccines several weeks before you leave.

3. Carry some cash, plan for mobile money

Cards work in hotels and larger shops, but markets, taxis and small restaurants prefer cash in Ghana cedis. Withdraw from bank ATMs in town centres and keep small notes for everyday purchases.

4. Getting around

Ride-hailing apps and licensed taxis are the simplest options in Accra and Kumasi. For longer trips between cities, book a reputable driver or join a guided tour so travel time is not wasted.

5. Dress for the weather and for respect

Pack light, breathable clothing, sun protection and a rain jacket. Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting chiefs' palaces, churches and traditional sites.

6. Be careful with food and water

Drink bottled or filtered water, choose busy food stalls with freshly cooked meals and try local dishes such as jollof rice, waakye and grilled tilapia.

7. Learn a few words

A simple greeting goes a long way. Locals appreciate visitors who try words in Twi, such as Akwaaba (welcome) and Medaase (thank you).

8. Book with people who know the country

A local guide opens doors that a guidebook cannot, from the history of Cape Coast Castle to the best time to visit a market. Browse our tour listings to find a trip that fits your dates.
