The Central Region coast is where Ghana's history is easiest to see and feel. Cape Coast and Elmina sit about 15 kilometres apart and are often visited together in a single long day from Accra or as an overnight stop.
Cape Coast Castle
Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important memorials to the Atlantic slave trade in West Africa. A guided tour takes you through the dungeons, the courtyard and the Door of No Return. Allow around ninety minutes and visit in the morning, before the heat builds.
Elmina Castle
Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482, is the oldest European building south of the Sahara. Your guide will explain how it passed through Portuguese, Dutch and British hands. Afterwards, walk to the Elmina fishing harbour to see the painted canoes.
Kakum National Park
If you have extra time, Kakum National Park is about 30 kilometres inland. Its canopy walkway runs high above the rainforest floor and is best done early in the day.
Where to eat
Beachfront restaurants in both towns serve grilled fish, fried plantain and banku. Ask what was caught that morning.
Getting there
The drive from Accra takes roughly three to four hours depending on traffic, so leave early. A guided tour with transport removes the planning and lets you focus on the history.
